Program Statement

The Educators and Board of Directors of Wyoming Wee Ones Co-operative Nursery School follows ”How Does Learning Happen?” Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years (2014). Wyoming Wee Ones uses a play-based learning approach to create the best environment for children to learn and grow.

It is essential for us to provide a nurturing environment with experiences that encourage all our children to reach their full potential. Our program at Wyoming Wee Ones reflects the following philosophy and program statement. To ensure consistent implementation across Wyoming Wee Ones, this Program Statement is reviewed annually by all of Wyoming Wee Ones staff, educators, board of directors and community partners, so that we can strengthen the quality of our program and ensure high quality experiences.

What is a Co-operative Nursery School?

A co-operative nursery school is organized and administered by the parents of the attending preschoolers. Family members or guardians can serve as executive members, attend co-op meetings, work on committees, fundraise and help with various projects. This offers the parents the chance to be involved in their child’s early education and to have a voice in the daily operation of the school.

Parental assistance also means that fees can be kept low. A Co-operative offers families a chance to make new friends – people who acknowledge the importance of quality early childhood education, and who want to be part of it. Our Co-op works well simply because everyone works together to ensure that the exceptional quality of the school is maintained.

Early Childhood Educators

Care and learning at Wyoming Wee Ones is guided by Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECEs), skilled professionals who have chosen to work with children, students and families as their career. They are responsible for what happens in the playroom environment and, through a combination of post-secondary education and continuing professional development, have acquired the knowledge required to be co-learners in children’s growth, development and constructing knowledge together. Educators engage with, observe and listen to children. (HDLH p15). Wyoming Wee Ones supports continuous learning of educators by providing opportunities for learning. Teachers discuss with other educators {through professional development}, children, family and caregivers, the possibilities for children’s further exploration. All are co-learners, constructing knowledge together (HDLH p 15).

While planning and creating positive learning environments, experiences, and contexts for children’s learning and development educators are responsive to the children’s right to:

Belong by being connected to others and contributing to their world.
Be aware of the health, safety, nutrition and well-being of all children (examples of these are conducting monthly fire drills, daily & monthly playground inspections and following Canada’s Food Guide)
Be an actively engaged learner who explores the world around them
Be a capable communicator with the ability to express themselves in many ways. (HDLH p13) Be aware of a child’s ability to self-regulate. (TFA 2013) By allowing and encouraging the children to problem solve.

Our educators provide both child initiated and adult supported experiences both indoors and outdoors during active play, rest and at quiet times. Wyoming Wee Ones educators foster the children’s exploration of play and inquiry by acknowledging each child’s learning style and providing the environment that is accessible to each child.

"Miss Tracy" - Tracy Aikin

Hello everyone, my name is Tracy Aikin! I am the Supervisor and RECE teacher here at Wee Ones Co- Operative Nursery School. I have been the supervisor for the past 14 years and teacher for 16 years. I take great pride in knowing that our centre strives for excellence and quality in childcare by offering a warm and nurturing environment for your child’s first school experience! I love watching them develop and gain new experiences and friendships together as we are co-learners in the same environment. All past and present students hold a special place in my heart and I’m so proud to continue watching them grow, even beyond our centre.

Prior to Wyoming Wee-Ones, I worked for Lambton College in the ECE Centre and their off-site campus in Corunna for over 9 years after having completed Early Childhood Education with specialized certification in Infant and Toddler, and worked towards my BA in Psychology at the University of Windsor. I was then blessed with the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom to my two amazing (now grown) children, Katelyn and Michael. At that time, I also ran a childcare program from my home here in Wyoming. I continue taking professional development courses and programs to learn new ideas and gain valuable resources to enhance your child’s learning experience.

When I’m not at Wee Ones, I love spending time with family, including our new granddaughter, Hadley, and going on new adventures with my husband, Doug, and our dog, Loki.

"Miss Afton" - Afton Helps

I have been an RECE at Wyoming Wee Ones for 14 years and enjoy it very much. I always look forward to the start of a new school year and meeting new children and their families. One of my absolute favourite parts of this job is being able to witness and aid in the development of some of the first friendships that children will create on their own. I believe that we, at Wyoming Wee Ones, have developed a program that really focuses on learning social, emotional and cognitive developmental skills through a play based approach that prepares children for kindergarten.

When I’m not at Wee Ones, chances are I am either at an arena or ball diamond. As the mom of two boys, I’m always driving somewhere for sports and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I love watching my children do what they love!

What does the Board of Directors do?

Wyoming Wee Ones Co-operative Nursery School is a non-profit organization. Its’ Board of Directors is made up of parent volunteers who work together to manage the organization. Parents who are board members are actively involved in the decision making process of the Centre. Serving on the board provides the parents with the opportunity to participate in a democratic process while building, managing and improving the Centre in many areas. Throughout the year, the Wyoming Wee Ones’ Board meets once a month for an evening meeting. (no regular meetings in July and Aug).

Legal Responsibilities of the Board - Board members are legally responsible for governing the corporation and may be liable for misusing or neglecting their legal responsibilities. Board members are expected to:

Govern the corporation with leadership, strategic direction and planning
Meet the financial and legal obligations of the corporation
Act honestly and in the best interest of the corporation, due diligence
State a conflict of interest if there is a difference between the interest of the corporation and personal interests
Declare a conflict of interest if they stand to benefit financially, directly or indirectly, from the actions of the Board
Know the By-laws (Policies and Procedures) of the corporation
Attend meetings regularly and be prepared to discuss all items on the agenda
Review all reports and correspondence from licensing authorities
Make financial decisions based on knowledge and professional counsel, if appropriate
Take a leadership role in the formation and implementation of policies for the corporation

Organization of the School

Compliance with Policies and Program Statement

The Policies and Procedures are put in place along with the Program Statement to make sure that your child’s day in our Centre runs smoothly, securely and safely and is filled with appropriate learning experiences.

All individuals with interactions within Wyoming Wee Ones are expected to be familiar with and adhere (at all times) to the Centre’s policies and procedures and Program Statement.
